Desde 1999 Cowparade está organizando los mayores eventos públicos de arte urbano. Primero se convoca un concurso para que los artistas locales hagan sus propuestas. Se invitan también a algunos artistas y profesionales de la moda para darle glamour y notoriedad social al evento.
La exposición está sufragada por patrocinadores que "adoptan las vacas" convirtiéndolas en algunos casos en vacas-anuncio.
Al finalizar el evento, se realiza una subasta cuyas ganancias están destinadas a proyectos de entidades sin ánimo de lucro. Desde el inicio CowParade ha recaudado 13 millones de euros.
Para la muestra de Madrid se presentaron al concurso 1.126 propuestas. También se ha invitado a participar artistas como Alfonso Berridi, Antonio Alvarado, Sean Mackaoui, SUSO 33, Agatha Ruiz de la Prada, y Víctor Ochoa.
