En los sesenta el "pop art" surgió a la vez en Nueva York y en Londres. Fue una reacción al lenguaje intelectual y elitista del expresionismo abstracto así como a su carácter antropocéntrico. El "pop", en cambio, buscó una marcada frialdad y objetividad; su iconografía se nutrió de elementos del mundo cotidiano o de imágenes relacionadas con los medios de información.
A partir de los años 70 en adelante del siglo pasado, Warhol fue muy prolífico en su producción artística.
Realizó numerosas pinturas, grabados, fotografías y dibujos, incluyendo sus famosas series Mao, Skulls o cráneos, Hammer and Siclkles o Martillo y hoz, Guns o pistolas, Knives o cuchillos, Crosses cruces, Dollar Sign o signos de dólar y Camouflage o camuflaje, finalizando con la serie "La Ultima cena", que se basaba en el fresco del mismo nombre de Da Vinci.
Se reproduce en esta obra uno de sus conocidos cuadros titulados Skulls o cráneos y ni que decir tiene que elige esta imagen de una calavera por lo impactante, como también hará con cada una de las imágenes elegidas para sus series.
Utilizando el acrílico combinado con técnicas de la serigrafía, colores brillantes y sin graduación, cada cuadro de la serie tiene la misma estructura. Warhol cambia en cada una de las pinturas los colores de la cabeza, de la almohadilla y de cada una de las dos franjas del fondo.
